I had an idea a few minutes ago that I think would be great for the country. President Trump should announce the creation of a federal Facebook, a federal search engine, a federal Internet messaging system, and a federal video repository, all available for use by the public.
The tools should be under the jurisdiction of a bipartisan commission. Since the FCC is already, by regulation, run by a bipartisan commission (no more than three of its five commissioners can belong to the same party), it wouldn't be a bad choice. Otherwise, a Federal Social Media Department, reporting to Congress (not the President) could be established.
The reason for the bipartisan control is to prevent these tools from being weaponized by one party against the other. We've already seen how that can happen and how dangerous it is.
YouTube, Google, Facebook and Twitter would be free to continue to exist. I think they would operate in a very different fashion if they knew that an alternative they didn't control was available to their customers.
Best of all, the looks on these CEOs' faces as their stocks went right down the crapper on the day of the announcement would be priceless.
