My first clue was finding my lettuce pulled out of the ground roots and all. Most critters don't do that. It wasn't until two weeks after that that my son actually saw it at the garden.
We know where it's holed up - under a rock wall that's covered with grape vines. The burrow itself isn't visible thanks to that, but I've seen a couple of others and know what they look like - a little smaller in diameter than a bowling ball and always dug sideways into hillsides as opposed to going directly down.
