It's hardwood - mostly oak, maple and cherry.
Some folks here have logs delivered, which they split themselves. That saves money. I've got a log splitter, but it's so buried under and behind boxes from my move that getting to it (and putting it away again) is out of the question. I'm also inexperienced at splitting my own wood, though I want to learn. After all, $700+ per year is a big expense. I think it's cheaper than heating with oil, though.
