...an old phone guy trick is to use a short piece of chain (6 inch or so) small links. Tie a string to one end and drop it in the hole. The chain will work its way thru misaligned holes. I have even fished concrete block walls with no more to work with than small hole in the top and another in the bottom.
...also bend a piece of fish tape to resemble a hook on one end and the other end just fold back on itself to make that end blunt. It will provide you a handle and ya won't poke an eye out with the blunt end. It will help ya reach up inside the bottom hole and fish around for the chain and or the string.
Liberals are like a "Slinky". Totally useless, but somehow ya can't help but smile when you see one tumble down a flight of stairs!
