De,
I sympathize with you.

I assume the conduit is like a 'U' - pulling the cap off the bottom
didn't just let the water run on out?

I would try using the shop vac like a blower to blow the water from
the top out the bottom. If that works you could also try using the
shop vac to blow the string through.

Interesting thing at work the other week. I was trying to install
a door magnetic switch, and I had drilled up through the steel frame,
through mortar etc. and down from the wall through the mortar etc.
I knew the two holes met as I had concrete dust falling out the
bottom hole. I tried pushing a wire through it . . . and it refused
to go through. Boss suggested using the shop vac to suck a string through.
Before I put the vacuum to it I started pushing my string down . . .
And the end of the string came falling out the bottom of the hole.

Zim.

I'm feeling a little bummed. A lot of things have been going wrong - including a new electrician who hasn't sent me a single update in a month and a homebuilder who just told me that his medical problems have worsened and he has to bow out of my project.

Today, the internet company came out and told me that the conduit from the street to my house lacks a drawstring so I have to call them out again when I've rectified the problem. I found the other end of the conduit and discovered that it was never capped and is full of water. I have no idea how I'm going to clear it. What's more, I fished a badly decomposed frog out of the conduit . . . which tells me that it is going to have almost 15 years of SEDIMENT clogging it up. @#%! Why does there have to be a hassle associated with every single project???

I spent an hour searching for my shop-vac and I can't find it. In theory, I can blow the water out of the pipe if I use the shop-vac at the street. I have a feeling that's not going to work, though. Water weighs a lot and air doesn't have a whole lot of pushing power.

If that works, pulling a drawstring through the conduit by putting the shop-vac into suction mode will be comparatively easy. If I can find the stupid thing, that is.
