Can't be absolutely sure, but they kinda look like oak tree sprouts to me. If they are, the stalk will be really strong and tough to break. If they aren't, then pull 'em up, dry 'em out, chop 'em up, roll 'em, and smoke 'em - see what happens.

I bought compost from a lady up the street who makes it herself, and I was delighted when volunteer tomato plants began springing up all over my new garden. A friend came by and said, "Uh, those don't look like tomatoes."

Hmmm. You don't suppose they might be . . . ???? Nawwww. But the idea is still floating around in my head. After all, I'm just across the river from Vermont where such things are legal, and I really don't know the back story on that compost. I figure Nemo is an authority on this stuff and can tell me.
