President Donald Trump signed an executive order halting the practice of separating children from parents who enter the United States illegally after a nationwide outcry opposing the policy and pressure from Republicans in Congress trying to find a solution to end it.
"The secretary of Homeland Security, shall, to the extent permitted by law and subject to the availability of appropriations, maintain custody of alien families during the pendency of any criminal improper entry or immigration proceeding involving their members"
The president's abrupt decision to change course and respond to the public outcry came after a growing number of Republicans in Congress and other GOP luminaries this week spoke out against the policy, deeming it unnecessarily cruel
