Re: “...it's a TRIFID!”
I may be the only one here who has read the terrific John Wyndham novel, The Day of the Triffids. The movie you referenced was both poorly made and a travesty given how it butchered the book's plot and changed the ending.
I've got a copy in my garage if, after all these years, the mice haven't eaten it.
To micro:
No, triffids don't eat people. They are plants with three unique characteristics: (1) They possess whip-like stingers which can hurt a man but aren't likely to kill him unless he is stung many times - and that's bad, (2) they can walk, albeit slowly - which is even worse, and (3) they produce a popular oil so farmers raise them in great numbers - which proves disastrous in this novel.
In the book, an unexpected meteor storm strikes the earth for almost 24 hours, providing an amazing light show that has the whole world agog. Unfortunately, when folks awaken the next day, they find themselves utterly blind. A relative handful of people miss the show for a variety of reasons and are unscathed, but they find themselves on a planet where no one else can see and death follows quickly. Triffids play a role as well, escaping from their farms and picking off the easy targets.
In some ways, it is an end-of-the-world story akin to Lucifer's Hammer, Alas Babylon, Earth Abides and The Stand, and a little less like On The Beach, The Last Man on Earth, The White Plague, Childhood's End and Forge of God, none of which ultimately leave any survivors. The triffids make Wyndham's novel a little more fantastic than most of the others, but in this age of genetic modifications maybe it's not so far fetched at that.
Good book. I've read it several times and would recommend it. It didn't get a lot of publicity when it came out, but you can still find it on Amazon.
It was nice to see that The Day of the Triffids made this list of the 21 Best Post-Apocalyptic novels:
