De,
Sounds like you are off to a good start.
If I was you, I'd be digging out the rocks and some
of that 'hardpan' out of the garden plot and filling
in the hole(s) with the stuff from the forest.

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers in big
flower pots. I think I'd try filling the pot about
three fourths with the stuff from the forest, then
the rest with potting soil.

As for the rocks - I would drag them over to where
'I' think the property line is and start building a
fence with them.
