...I have relatives who owned slaves and relatives who didn't. Generally speaking, the ones who owned slaves were assholes. The notion that one human being can own another one is so alien to my concept of how the world oughta be.

well sire, I agree with that as well and unfortunately, you and I were born in far different times than those of the antebellum period.

Unfortunately slavery has existed in very early beginnings of mankind and the Bible testifies of enslaved peoples of various places... The Israelites were slaves in Egypt over 400 years.... Now that is a long time...

Every time the MOOSLIMS got into a fight with someone and they won, they took the defeated enemy and turned them into slaves... The Medieval days of Europe were rife with slavery on many levels.

Of course, since the colonists came from Europe where they were exposed to slavery, that was what they knew and they thought it perfectly normal....

It's difficult to pass judgment on a people from so long a time ago because we have no idea what they experienced, were taught, thought was right (even though wrong), and then try to unravel all the many bad things that were a result of it.

I am THANKFUL I was not born in those times. I am grateful I was born when I was and have the privilege of living in these times in spite of corrupt politicians and such. Evil has always existed and been present so what has really changed? Nothing.

I only wish that a workable compromise to a war could have been reached between calmer heads who could see the destruction and ruin of so many families and the loss of so many lives and the crippling and maiming of so many soldiers who were nothing more than farmers..

A very sad time in history and one we want to avoid...
if possible....
