...it ain't about the bags, or pollution or the environment. It's about the money. Do you have any idea how many plastic bags most grocery stores go thru in a day?

Each year the United States uses 30 billion plastic and 10 billion paper grocery bags, requiring approximately 14 million trees and 12 million barrels of oil.

...at a dime each, that's a helluva lot of money.

I'm currently in California - where stores are required by law to bill their customers 10¢ for every plastic bag they use. They tell me it's for a good cause, used to clean up plastic left on the side of the road or polluting the state's rivers. Okay. I can see that. But when I was in Home Depot today, they bagged my purchases and failed to warn me that I was being charged extra for the bags. I protested! We retired folk have to watch our nickels and dimes, after all. Home Depot's courteous staff put me at ease, though, explaining that their bags are free. Only California's grocery stores are required to charge the ten cent fee. I appreciated their explanation, but I find the exemption for hardware stores stupid - and inconvenient. It forces me to sort through my bags every time I want to throw a few in the river.
