I'll be doing what I want to do and for my family's benefit from now on

You are right and that is where the real fulfillment comes from.
Again, all the best,

Re: “but, knowing your plans, I think the real work is just about to begin.”

Thank you, and yes, there will be a lot to do. But I'll be doing what I want to do and for my family's benefit from now on, not for someone else's. That puts work into an entirely different category that doesn't qualify as meaningless drudgery the way most of what I've done for the last 13 years did.

If you aren't sensing a 'vibe' here, I'll be more blunt. I haven't enjoyed cyber security very much. It's monotonous, unfulfilling work that no one really appreciates. Mostly it involves putting up hurdles for the developers (which is what I used to be) and spending tons of company money. If you do the job well, nothing happens. If you do the job poorly, the system gets hacked. In neither case do you have any opportunity to shine. Nobody ever says "This is awesome! Your cyber security guys are phenomenal!" But a few days ago, the big boss DID accuse my team of "oversecuring" the system. Hah!

The job paid well, but I'm glad it's over.
