So much for the cheap gas at NY Exit 1.
When my wife and I drive to New Hampshire, we always take the same route: North to Scranton, then 84 East through New York. Where PA, NY and NJ meet, there's a little town called Port Jervis where we always get gas at the New Jersey stations. We aren't the only ones. A huge amount of the freeway traffic stops there for the same reason.
Port Jervis is about halfway into our drive and usually has the lowest price on Regular for the whole trip. As an additional perk, all New Jersey stations are full service. New Jersey is one of those weird places where nobody is allowed to pump their own gas.
The prices are low because of low gas taxes, of course. Raising them is about the most obvious change the state can make if it wants more revenue - however, it will cost them my business and could backfire on a larger scale. Since it's a small state, residents may decide to cross a border and buy their gas elsewhere from now on. It's what I'd do if I lived there - which I never would due to its draconian anti-gun laws.
New Jersey is an extremely liberal state. I have to wonder if the residents will figure out that their political views are what cause the financial problems. Nahhh - these are liberals. Their thinking doesn't go beyond, "Hey, life sucks here. Maybe we could move to a nicer state and ruin it too!"
