.38-55 Winchester - introduced in 1876. Bullet weight = 255 grains. Velocity at muzzle = 1,593 fps. Energy at muzzle = 1,437 ft/lbs.

5.56x45mm - introduced in 1963. Bullet weight = 62 grains. Velocity at muzzle = 3,100 fps. Energy at muzzle = 1,359 ft/lbs.

I'd rather be hit with a 5.56 ... especially if it was coming out of a rifled barrel (the original concept was to use a smooth-bore barrel that would encourage the bullet to wobble and eventually tumble, thereby creating a larger wound cavity).
