One can (usually) make smaller purchases
over time. Increasing holdings. Most also offer
dividend re-investing

I would think this would work best in a retirement account or you might have a tax nightmare when you sell.

I assume most of you know what I am talking about.

Instead of going through a brokerage one goes through
a transfer agent and buy the shares 'directly'.

I find it great for making and holding long long long
term investments.

Advantages : One can (usually) make smaller purchases
over time. Increasing holdings. Most also offer
dividend re-investing (automatically) and allow for
ownership of partial shares.

Disadvantages : One doesn't really know what price the
shares will be bought for till some time after the
purchase. One can also not 'sell quickly' and one will
usually not know the sale price till after it is all
said and done.

Overall I really like them.
But I am a 'buy and hold' kind of guy.

(I've owned some of my Dominion Resources stocks for
over twenty years now.)
