Congress failed to pass a funding bill before the midnight Friday deadline.
The federal government shut down at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, January 20, after Congress failed to reach a compromise on a bill to fund the government.
House Republicans passed a bill on Thursday to fund the government for four weeks and extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program for six years, after Congress had failed to reauthorize that program for the last four months. But immigration — and especially the fate of unauthorized immigrants who came to the US as children and are protected by DACA — was a sticking point, and most Democrats and a few Republicans in the Senate opposed the House measure.
But on a procedural vote late Friday, which needed 60 votes to advance the House spending bill, 45 Senate Democrats — and four Senate Republicans — rejected it.
