We'll get some of that benefit, with the basement dug into the hill on three sides. Only the front of the basement/garage will be entirely exposed to the outside, and probably none of its back.

I can understand wanting an underground house in New Mexico. Most of the state is hot. Throughout most of the rest of the U.S., though, underground rooms carry a risk of flooding and mildew/mold. Two of the three houses I've lived in here had some water issues in the basement. It's also nice to be able to look outside once in a while. People in New Hampshire go stir crazy as it is since they stay indoors for most of four months every year. Not being able to even look outside would be a problem.

Since our new house will be well up the side of a hill, I don't anticipate water issues. You can never be sure, though. Underground water moves in funny ways.

When living in New Mexico, I thought if I
built a house it would be under ground (on
a hill side). They need less heat and AC.
