...acquitted would mean he is "not guilty". He was guilty as hell and everybody knew it. The Senate (dem controlled senate at the time) just decided that his trespasses did not rise to the level of a high crime or misdemeanor for which he should be fired. Acquitted would mean he didn't do it.
