Bitcoin: $64m in cryptocurrency stolen in 'sophisticated' hack, exchange says

Thursday 7 December 2017

Nearly $64m in bitcoin has been stolen by hackers who broke into Slovenian-based bitcoin mining marketplace NiceHash.

The marketplace suspended operations on Thursday while it investigated the breach, saying it was working with law enforcement as “a matter of urgency” while urging users to change their passwords.

The hack was “a highly professional attack with sophisticated social engineering” that resulted in approximately 4,700 bitcoin being stolen, worth about $63.92m at current prices, said NiceHash head of marketing Andrej P Škraba.

What should we do with stolen bitcoins?

https://www.coindesk.com/what-should-we-do-with-stolen-bitcoins/

Thousands of bitcoins have been stolen from users since the virtual currency started, and yet we can see all of these thefts happen, in real time, on the block chain. We know which addresses the stolen coins are sent to, and which ones they are stolen from. We can track the life of a bitcoin through the network.

Why, then, can't we simply take those stolen coins out of commission?

Zim: This article goes on to say, basically, that
BitCoin can easily be laundered to the point that
it is almost impossible to say with any certainty
that the bitcoins were stolen.

Bitcoin can be stolen.

This is something I don't understand. I thought the blockchain was a record of all transactions. Why can't fraudulent transactions be identified and reversed?

I know fraud is a problem but I don't know why.
