I've heard it said many times that America's military would never be willing to kill civilians. This is nonsense. It almost happened in the 1920s.

Protesters in Washington prompted Herbert Hoover to call in the military. For the first time, tanks rolled down the streets. Troops affixed bayonets and marched against the protesters. They were *that* close to being used.
