Queer is an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who are not heterosexual and/or not cisgender. Originally meaning "strange" or "peculiar", queer came to be used pejoratively against those with same-sex desires or relationships in the late 19th century. Beginning in the late 1980s, queer scholars and activists began to reclaim the word to establish community and assert an identity distinct from the gay identity.

Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

re: "Now it is used as one of many of these descriptive words. Does anybody understand any of this?"

There's really only one person on AtomicBob's who can answer this. Does someone want to ask that individual if he finds the word "queer" offensive?

I don't think he will. My understanding is that "queer" is considered acceptable by that group today.
