Woman experiences sex amnesia; Transient global amnesia is an extremely rare occurance

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/woman-experiences-sex-amnesia-transient-global-amnesia-extremely-rare-occurance-article-1.962815

Imagine sex so intense, it literally blows your mind.

A 54-year-old woman discovered she'd become a victim of transient global amnesia when she told emergency room doctors that she couldn't remember anything that had happened 24 hours previously, reports LiveScience.

Her gap in memory started right after sex with her husband, just an hour before seeking medical help. Since then, her memory had been foggy and she'd felt confused.

Her case, which was documented in the September issue of The Journal of Emergency Medicine, was diagnosed as a rare condition in which memory suddenly, but temporarily, disappears.

But what about the sex actually caused it?

Experts aren't exactly sure what causes transient global amnesia – it occurs only in three to five people out of 100,000 every year – but doctors believe it may have something to do with raising the pressure inside the abdomen during sex, Sebastian Ameriso, a neurologist at the Institute for Neurological Research in Buenos Aires mused to LiveScience.

The "valsalva maneuver," or the act of bearing down during sex, could allow deoxygenated blood to push back up the neck, allowing oxygen-poor blood to "pile up" in the veins draining the brain, he said. This sudden lack of oxygen-rich blood could affect the central brain regions key to memory formation.

Silly me ... I had just initially presumed that this Brit had drunken sex, woke up the next morning to a "Coyote Ugly" beast beside him, and his brain mercifully tried to compensate by shutting down his eyesight. Apparently, I have led a sheltered life. Yer majesty, would you enlighten us all about this "maneuver," please?

Man Goes Partially Blind After Orgasm Following "Vigorous" Sex

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/11/25/man-goes-partially-blind-after-orgasm-following-vigorous-sex/

A man went partially blind in one eye after "vigorous" sex caused him to orgasm too hard, according to a paper in the British Medical Journal.

The paper included the case study of a 29-year-old man, who told an emergency eye clinic that he noticed "an obstruction in the central vision of his left eye, which he had noticed on waking that morning."

The diagnosis was unclear at first, and clinicians asked the man to return for a follow-up visit three days later, according to the case study.

A different clinician asked the patient specific questions about his sexual activity. The patient responded that he had "vigorous sexual intercourse" the night before he started experiencing symptoms.

The doctor concluded that the man performed the "Valsalva maneuver," meaning that he tensed his abdominal muscles and held his breath during sex.

This caused a blood vessel in his eye to pop because of the increased pressure to his chest.

After taking his medical history, the clinician diagnosed him with postcoital valsalva retinopathy.

The case study notes that the man's condition resolved itself over time without any further intervention.

Other studies noted that the Valsalva maneuver's intense pressure to blood vessels in the brain caused amnesia in some patients.
