It applies, but I already knew most of it. Interestingly, it discusses nothing but animals I'm planning for: Rabbits, chickens, goats, sheep and maybe pigs. I'll also get llamas - which aren't mentioned in the article - since llamas will herd with sheep and protect them.

But, except for a dog, I'm not getting any animals for a while. We'll want to have the barn and house finished. We're also thinking about buying an RV and touring the U.S.A. a bit before we settle down and start raising animals. Once we start with the animals, vacations will probably be a thing of the past. (Unless we bring on a farm hand, and I don't know what the chances of that are.)

I wish the article recommended specific breeds.

I spoke to a farmer a while back and took the following notes:

hoovershatchery.com is a good source for mail-order chickens. Kerry just bought 58. He likes Cornish hens. Half are roosters, half are hens. The roosters are for meat since they grow faster. In 8 weeks they can be butchered. Only one rooster is needed to service the hens.

For meat, Kerry goes through about 20 chickens per year. He has a butcher do the cleaning since it takes 20 minutes apiece if he does it himself and the butcher will do it for $2.

Kerry hasn’t tried turkeys but they are another option. They can be butchered in twelve weeks. Folks say turkeys are especially stupid and will kill themselves, therefore they may not be worth raising.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
