In the past, some farmers and ranchers
were almost slave owners. They brought
in Mexicans to do work and paid them
very little. Mostly they just fed and
housed them. At the time the Mexicans
did it because they could not afford
to live in Mexico.

Slavery is and was evil. Most of the slave owners were wealthy and bought their way out of serving in the military. Some bought themselves commissions. Your average 'grunt' had little or nothing before the war and considerably less after. They were as much victims of the war as anyone else.
