When Veronica Zavaleta fled an abusive partner in Mexico City in 2001, she felt a sense of security in her new Nashville home.
Today, Zavaleta, 43, says the town that embraced her years ago feels less welcoming, in part because state officials helped block a pro-immigrant measure by city leaders that would limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
"I feel like I should be able to reach my local authorities," said Zavaleta, who owns a cleaning company. "I don't see why I can't have a voice." ...
Well, let me tell you, Veronica ... you don't have the right to have any say so in this because you are here in the U.S. ILLEGALLY - you are an ILLEGAL ALIEN! The leftist city leaders weren't promoting a "pro-immigrant measure" ... they were promoting a "pro-illegal alien measure" ... which is ILLEGAL! The fact that you fled an abusive husband in MEXICO CITY doesn't give you any special dispensation to illegally enter our country and then bitch and whine about how you "don't have a voice" in what goes on here. If an American illegally enters Mexico, Mexican authorities will throw that American into jail and throw away the key. So, pray tell, why shouldn't we be able to enforce our immigration laws against you, eh? Answer is - we can and we should - period. Mexico is a big country ... if you want to get away from your abusive husband, flee to some other part of Mexico ... the U.S. is not the de facto safe harbor for every victim (or anyone who "feels" like they are a victim) around the world.

Veronica Zavaleta and her teenage sons spent all day last month installing five security cameras, but it wasn't to discourage would-be burglars.
The camera system is meant to serve as an early warning system in case immigration agents show up.
"We check the monitor before we open the door and if it's somebody we don't know, we definitely don't open it," Zavaleta said. "If something happens to me, I will lose everything I've been working for."
...
She felt her chances of winning asylum as a Mexican woman in the United States were slim, so she decided it would be safer for her family to remain under the radar.
Well, Veronica ... losing what you worked for is a definite, predictable risk when what you have worked for is based on an illegal act on your part. And, now that you have given this interview, I'd say your chances for expulsion have increased quite a bit. Stupid ... stupid ... stupid.
