As you alluded, people who have it easy throughout their lives become weaker. The Greatest Generation did SUCH A good job that several generations of American sloth have resulted. The country has, essentially, been cannibalizing itself for the last fifty years, thriving only because of the extraordinary wealth of resources, technology, intellectual property and, yes, wealth, gathered here primarily by the Greatest Generation.
I didn't think we could have a generation that was worse in this respect (lazy, destructive) than the Communal '60s, but it's clear that I was wrong. Today's kids have had it SO easy that I can't even imagine how they would fare in a calamity. I imagine it will be a veritable turkey shoot for whoever the first serious opponent (either human or circumstantial) will ultimately be.
