As I sit here in my office away from my wife and grandchildren and their parents, what the Professor wrote struck me like lightning going through me.
I had begun thinking about the truth of Melania's statement , while not original, still true and still needs to be verbalized. WHY.
Because if we don't, we will forget those who fell and gave their very lives for this country we live in.
While far from perfect, it is still better than anything else short of owing your own private island under your own authority. Of course with that comes huge responsibility for things we take for granted like protection, roads to drive on, places to go and things to see and do. Running water that is okay to drink. You get the idea....
I am remembering men of my squad and platoon who did not make it back. Who gave their all and did not complain. They were black men and latino, and caucasian. They all bled red blood and they all gave their lives and said yes sir as ordered and fought the enemy. They did not complain.
I often have wondered why I did not find similar fate. Why did I survive. Why did I make it back and they did not?
Memories are flooding over me like waves right now. I usually don't think about those days much unless Memorial Day or veterans Day comes along and I try to repress those memories.
ANyway, I need to sign off and be alone a bit. Hold down the fort. See ya later...
