I thought it was far higher than that. But I spent most of my life in California, so you can see why I had an incorrect impression.
In the past, it occurred to me that U.S. land holdings might be the savior the country needs. After all, the U.S. carries a staggering debt, but it also in a position to sell a huge amount of property.
Enough property? Unfortunately, no. The government's 640 million acres would have to sell for about $22,000 per acre to offset the $140 trillion debt that has amassed. That's not going to happen. Most of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico and Alaska is less than desirable. There's a reason people aren't living in the desolations of the country!
