...there was a time in my life when no one had health insurance and everybody could afford medical care. Before health insurance there were far fewer hypochondriacs also.

Agreed, DE. It is and has long been, my contention that insurance is a very huge component of the problem.

Basic premise of insurance is 'gambling'- hoping to get something of much greater value than what one is paying for. That is called "coveting that which is thy neighbor's", but we make it morally acceptable to OURSELVES by saying 'well, both sides (both neighbors) are agreeing to the arrangement'. That's the same language used to make 'open marriages' acceptable.
