Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

It feels like many important (and some not-so-important) parts of my life are drawing to a close. My father passed. My son is graduating high school - and there are all sorts of "lasts" associated with that (last time on stage, last choir banquet, last report card, final music recital this Sunday, etc.) My son is leaving home. The house I'm in right now was SOLD (or at least put under contract) a few days ago. I've leased an apartment and am slowly moving things to it. I sold my piano. I sold my dining room set. I sold my patio set. Our mailman for the last seven years (a friendly guy with whom everyone was on a first-name basis) was given a new route last week. The town's biggest department store (K-mart) is closing. Power is being put in at my new land. The huge computer system I've worked for the last twelve years is being phased out (I intend to be gone before the likely-disastrous replacement arrives). And, of course, I'm retiring in eight months. Then, our last drive ever from Virginia to New Hampshire.

This evening, our 20-year-old cockatiel was found bleeding from a wing. That might be minor - it could be a damaged "blood feather," but birds are funny and I wouldn't be surprised if Ognir leaves us soon. (A cockatiel's life expectancy is 16 to 25 years.)

Then there's Jim Rogers, saying that the major collapse is going to happen this year or next. That would figure - if, after all this preparing, the collapse comes before I can get my garden started.

Things are happening fast.
