Note that Trump does not, and has not denied he said he HOPED the investigation would die down. HOWEVER, HOPING something happens, and expressing that hope - IS NOT TELLING COMEY NOR ASKING him to quit investigating - so the NYSLIMES flat out lied in their very first sentence.
President TRUMP neither asked nor told Comey to quit investigating, which the President has stated repeatedly.
