My take several years ago is alQ = ISIS.

We had the heat on Zawahiri and al Qaeda wanted to move to the next phase of their plan, the caliphate (they expect last phase to be completed in 2020). What better way to do it? Low risk, takes the heat off al Qaeda and low and behold, it worked. In the last few months, I have heard CT guys say ISIS is alQaeda. Interestingly, there are rumblings they will merge again, officially. Bet ya Baghdadi is dead and they want to get everyone together under the kid. And they may say Zawahiri's going to step down, but unless he's dying, I figure he'll say he's stepping down, again to keep the heat off, but stick around as the ideologue and adviser to the kid.

They can run, but they can't hide!

Interesting.

Note that the print version of that CBS article does not contain the 'aged' photo of the 'new bin laden'.

Also- Soufran points out that we should NOT pay attention to whatever name they call themselves - they change their name at will.

When Soufran was talking about fluid names - an obvious question would have to be "Does that mean that ISIS and ISIL are just basically camouflage names for AlQ ?

Good article, Linda - thanks for posting it.
