That's just Chevy's new safety mechanism. Upon impact, the car rips itself in two to improve the chances of catching an ejected passenger in the well-constructed seats. They're quite proud of it.
Ford did something along the same lines with its Pinto many years ago, rapidly oxidizing the gas tank contents in order to lower the risk of fire.

Upon first glance, the image above appears to show two vehicles that have been destroyed in a terrible accident.
But that’s just one car.
Even more unbelievable?
Everyone involved survived.
The accident happened on Saturday morning on Highway 101 near Cloverdale, California.
The car you see in the middle of the road in the image above is a Chevrolet Impala that was split down the middle. That’s the other half of it on the hill next to the highway.
According to The Press Democrat, Apol Lansang, 26, of Sonoma, was driving the Impala south on Highway 101 when she was struck by a Toyota Sequoia that was heading north. That car was being driven by Kevin Fenty, 27, of Huntington Beach. Fenty drifted across the highway into Lansang’s lane.
Tom Bond, a former U.S. Air Force ambulance driver, said the crash was “the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many accidents.”
The impact of the crash sliced Lansang’s car right down the middle. She suffered minor injuries.
Fenty was ejected from his vehicle, and has moderate injuries.
“The scene was, it was pretty intense,” said Sgt. Jason Bahlman, who has been with the CHP for 16 years, told The Press Democrat. “It was definitely one of the most severely damaged cars I’ve ever seen.”
