Have a nice trip De.
But I personally would recommend taking a few more days
driving across . . and try to find a few interesting
sights to visit. The Petrified Forest and the Painted
Desert are a couple that come to mind.

We'll be leaving in a week or so on a pretty long trip. I wish I could call it a vacation but no. I haven't really had a vacation in 20 years and why should I change that now? The plan is as follows:

1) Drive from NH to Charlottesville, VA.

Drop off a carload of empty boxes. Relax for 2 or 3 days in preparation for what's to come.

2) Drive from VA to San Diego. That's around 37 hours, so we'll find a hotel at the halfway mark and spend the night.

In San Diego, we'll help our son and roommate move. Because they have a month of overlap at the two apartments, we'll stay for an undetermined amount of time in the old unit, probably sleeping on an air mattress, and maybe taking in a little scenery and sunshine. San Diego ain't a half bad place for that.

3) Drive to Sacramento. I think that's under 8 hours.

My wife has already been there this year so it will be a short stay. We have to retrieve a really nice cedar chest that my parents willed to me. We'll stay for 2-3 days, probably at my brother's house.

My son needs a car badly and they're far more expensive in San Diego. I'm going to try to find something used and dependable when I'm in Sacramento. *IF* we find one, we'll be driving back to San Diego with both vehicles and then reverse course so as to return to Charlottesville.

4) Assuming we don't go back to San Diego, we'll be driving from Sacramento to Charlottesville as shown on the map - again with a single hotel someplace midway.

We need to empty the condo through a combination of boxing things up, selling/giving things away, and hauling stuff to the dump. We also need to paint as necessary, get an electrician to repair two known glitches and hire a realtor to sell the place. I'm not sure how long we'll stay. Maybe two weeks.

5) Get a small U-Haul, load whatever we're keeping into it, and drive both vehicles from Charlottesville to NH. This drive isn't shown below since we didn't want to clutter the map up with a duplicate route. The full drive will therefore be a bit longer than it says: About 107 hours and 7,000 miles, assuming a car purchase doesn't make it longer still.

That's if my wife drives and there are no serious traffic delays. If I drive, it'll be more like 95 hours.
