Know that if you use store-bought seed starting mix, you're likely overpaying by 2 to 3 times. If your gardening plans are small, it may make sense to buy an 8 quart bag - for which you'll pay $3 to $5. But if you're planning something larger, starter mix is very easy and inexpensive to make in quantity.

Note that this is NOT the same as potting soil or Miracle Grow. It's for seeds. Making your own is as simple as:

10 cups peat moss
2 cups perlite
2 cups water
1 tablespoon of a fertilizer such as Organic Garden Tone, though this will vary by fertilizer type.

Mix well, adding the water gradually.

and that's all there is to it.

I make much bigger batches and just try to use 5 times as much peat moss as perlite, with small amounts of fertilizer mixed in at the end. It's not necessary to be precise, but keep in mind that too much of a high nitrogen fertilizer can easily kill your plants.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
