DE,

Do the following to save your heirloom tomato seeds.

Take one of the best friuts and cut in half and save the top half and have a BLT or whatever with the bottom. Remove the seeds from the tomato top into a pint size jar with some pure water. Cover with a plastic wrap and keep the wrap in place with a rubber band. Then poke many holes in the plastic wrap and place in the sun to ferment for a week or two.

The fermentation removes the gel sacs surrounding the tomato seed. Scoop everything that is floating and discard. Strain the seeds that are left using a fine mesh strainer and rinse well. Then dump them on a paper towel or newspaper and try to seperate them so they do not dry in clumps. Once dried I put mine in a small paper envelope and write the name and year on the envelope and store in a cool dry place. I started some Kellogs Breakfast from 2015 seeds this year and ALL of them germinated. Your hybrid might produce one or both of the parent strains yet odds are slim it replicates what you remember.

This year I have the Yellow Pear for the 1st time along with Black Krim, Paul Robeson, Cherokee Purple, Mortgage Lifter, German Johnson, Mr Stripey, Rutgers and the Kellogs Breakfast. The Paul Robesons are my favorite and the Black Krim is a close second.

GOOD LUCK.

Stay safe - stay FREE!!!

PEACE

Re: “Prepper sites have been warning Americans for years, and the toilet paper panic was just a minor foreshadowing of a grim future for the food supply”
My truck had a recall on its air bags so we had to go into 'The Big City' this morning. While waiting, we shopped at Wal-mart and bought toilet paper for the first time since January '20. We aren't out, but we've used half of our T.P. and it's time to start restocking. I also headed over to the garden section and picked up seed for carrots, variety hot peppers and two types of cucumbers. So getting home and seeing your post on those same topics is a pretty good coincidence!

I've had seed growing indoors since early April. It seems I started my tomatoes too early since they're ready to go in the ground now but the weather won't be right until May. It's all part of learning.

For the first time, I am growing every type of heirloom tomato I've got. Most were prepped for 2019 so I can't count on their seeds lasting much longer:

• Ace 55
• Azoychka
• Beefsteak Red
• Big Rainbow
• Black Krim
• Brandywine Red
• Cherokee Purple
• Chocolate Stripes
• Floradade
• Golden Jubilee
• Marion
• Purple Calabash
• Red Cherry Large
• Rutgers
• Striped Stuffer
• Tigerella
• A different large cherry tomato of unknown variety
• Yellow Pear

and

• Burpee Honeycomb Hybrid (I don't know if I can harvest their seeds, but I'm going to try.)

When I moved to NH in 2018, I thawed a tomato I'd had in the freezer for three years and extracted its seeds. They grew like champs and I was delighted. No prep work needed - just throw a few tomatoes in the freezer! Last year, I froze several whole tomatoes of various types and also froze a jar filled with wet seed. NONE of them germinated when I planted them this year. I did a little reading and found I was very lucky that first time. Tomato seeds can be frozen but only grow [reliably] if they've first been dried. Okay. It's a good lesson. I don't know why I'd ever want to freeze tomato seeds again. When they've been dried, tomato seeds usually last several years even without freezing.
