A rare event. An attorney seeks to extort a payout and is charged for doing so.

This is the unseen issue. I believe it is widespread. It's just that Michael Avenatti asked for so much it made better sense for the corporate victim not to sweep it under the rug.

Getting usable statistics looks impossible to me. A lot of the fake claims are extorted from companies, which calculate that settling is cheaper than fighting and less risky. But they don't report the frequency of these claims. From what I have heard, it's quite common. And the number of attorneys in this field tells you that there are lots of cases.
