So we know that some of Trump's associates were concealing conversations with Putin's ambassador (Flynn, Kushner, Sessions) and others (including Stone) had back channel connections to Assange.
We also know Trump publically called on Putin for help with the election.
This cast of characters doesn't fill me with confidence that nefarious conversations were not had behind the scenes, in which Trump's campaign liaised with Putin about manipulating the election. An enquiry would reveal the truth.
This would be an entirely speculative suggestion except that we know the Russians sought to influence the election. It is a minor step to seek evidence that someone who publically announced the wish for Russian support actually colluded with the person he requested it from.
