I can just about believe Sessions made a contextual error at the time. Memories are funny things.
But surely, knowing the controversy swirling around Russian ties, he would have wanted to correct the record. It was clear that people were concerned about Russian links, especially after Flynn. Franken was asking about these links amongst the campaign's agents. It was obviously a broad question. It was obvious he was concerned about nefarious links and not about role-playing.
On the other hand, you have to say, surely Sessions knew this sort of question was coming. So it is hard to understand why he wasn't candid.
Sessions only needed to volunteer that he had two meetings about matters unconnected with the campaign during or after the meeting.
But he stuck with the stonewall. And it served his purpose and that of the administration.
It isn't just about his intention. It's about the appearance. And the damage to the administration and the legal system given by the appearance.
