Lawyer: WH Won’t Fight TX Voter ID Law
A lawyer for a voting-rights activism organization said Monday that the White House has informed her that the federal government will drop its opposition to Texas’s voter ID law.
Danielle Lang of the Campaign Legal Center told the Associated Press that she and the fellow plaintiffs in a case against the state’s strict restrictions were told by the U.S. Justice Department that it plans to file documents to drop its challenge to the law.
The DOJ, now under Jeff Sessions, has begun a reversal of several Obama White House policies—including the opposition to voter ID laws and the phasing out of private prisons.
The Texas law came under fire last year after the Obama administration joined a lawsuit against it, as the AP noted, and a federal appeals court ruled that because the law discriminated against minorities and the poor, it must be changed.
