The only damage that has been done is to the auxiliary spillway, which is a fair distance from the dam itself.

This issue has been discussed for the last couple of days on a engineering message board that I spend a lot of time on. There is a thread there with lots of pictures, one of which I posted below showing the extent and location of the damage (in the lower right side of the image) in the spillway relative to the rest of the dam.

The risk is not the failure of the dam itself, but rather that since the spillway has been damaged any water released down the spillway is now flowing out onto the mountain side where it could flood extensive low-lying areas before the flow finally makes it down to the river itself.

OROVILLE — An emergency evacuation has been ordered for Oroville-area residents by the state Department of Water Resources, which predicts that the auxilliary spillway at the Oroville Dam will fail within the next hour.
