it seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut problem.
there is a problem with islamic terrorism which many american people want to be addressed. the usa also has a tradition of welcoming immigration.
so it isn't simply a question of immigrant interests. it's about american citizens' security and culture as well.
you are not going to get a constructive conversation between both sides unless liberals talk about the latter and conservatives talk about the former.
for instance, islam isn't merely a "religion". it isn't the belief in allah that bothers people. it's the law and politics of islam which troubles many americans. and then it's the sympathy of a large minority of moslems with violence (see pew studies) which makes these american sceptics incensed.
so a solution is needed.
but this isn't it.
