Chaffetz: I’m looking into Trump D.C. hotel lease

Amid concerns about a potential conflict of interest, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Wednesday he has requested a copy of the lease for Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel.
Chaffetz told reporters he’s interested in seeing an “unredacted” version of the lease, following suggestions that Trump may be in violation of a clause prohibiting any elected official from being a party to the lease.
“I did request from the [General Services Administration] the full unredacted contract,” he told reporters, adding. “It’ll be interesting to see what they produce and what their take on it is.”
Chaffetz said he asked the GSA to produce the contract in early December but still hasn’t received it.
Trump leased the building that now houses his hotel — the Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Avenue — from the federal government in 2013.
A provision in the lease indicates that no “elected official of the Government of the United States … shall be admitted to any share or part of this Lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom.”
Asked about that provision, Chaffetz said, “I want to see the full contract without the redactions. It is something I’m looking at.”
