Governor John Kasich signed the 20-week abortion ban into law today, no doubt in the hopes that it would eventually be heard by a US Supreme Court stacked with Trump justices. The 20-week abortion ban callously disregards the unique circumstances that surround a woman’s pregnancy. The bill has no exceptions for rape or incest and the life of the woman exception is too narrow to apply, only allowing a procedure once a woman is on the brink of death or permanent organ damage. And backers of the measure refused to make exceptions for even the more serious fetal anomalies.
Because of your incredible activism, Kasich vetoed the equally dangerous six-week abortion ban commonly known as the “Heartbeat Bill." Over 37,499 of you emailed Kasich's office and countless thousands of you called the governor and demonstrated in your communities. However, we must gear up to fight this dangerous proposal again in January when the legislature returns to session.

John Kasich is playing games with women’s health. He thinks that by vetoing one abortion ban Ohioans will not notice that he has signed another. Once a woman has made the decision to end a pregnancy, she needs access to safe and legal abortion care in her community. Kasich’s actions today will fall hardest on low-income women, women of color, and young women. History will not judge Gov. Kasich’s disregard for women’s health kindly.
