“Slaughtering us like animals”: A Times photographer offers an extraordinary look at the Philippines’ crackdown on drugs

The photographer Daniel Berehulak has covered war, death and disease. “What I experienced in the Philippines,” he writes, “felt like a new level of ruthlessness: police officers’ summarily shooting anyone suspected of dealing or even using drugs, vigilantes’ taking seriously President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to ‘slaughter them all.’”
These photographs — which document 57 homicide victims over 35 days — take you inside Mr. Duterte’s bloody and chaotic campaign against drugs, which has claimed thousands of lives since he took office on June 30.
