To be fair to Trump, there are maybe five or six jobs for women in the world in which being slim is part of the job expectation. Miss Universe is one of those.
If a society is going to pretend it is disinterested in chubbiness, it shouldn't have a Miss Universe contest in the first place.
Do we want a world which is puritan in this way? I don't think so. We are what we are. Our imperfections want a latitude which is broader than that which a saint requires.
In that sense, while the nastiness of Trump's personality was exposed, the hypocrisy of movie-goers who prefer to watch a movie with a beautiful, slender lead actress, or of fashion-watchers who buy magazines populated by supermodels, or of television stations which fail to employ women of all sorts of shapes, is also in play.
It's not just a Trump moment. It's a social mirror moment.
