I understand. It is a long time since the choice of a Supreme Court justice was a non-partisan matter. I wish it were otherwise. Party hacks don't necessarily make the best judges. The folks one wants as justices are people who interpret the constitution in sensible, temporally sensitive and thoughtful ways.
But no principled person tasks a con-man with choosing a judge. The Republican Party is utterly lost. The fact it is acting the way it is tells you its choices would be without merit.
The Constitution isn't a Republican party document. We already know Senate Republicans disregard it when it is inconvenient. For instance, over the installation of new Supreme Court Justices.
The US system seems to be failing. All Constitutions are mostly about managing change. Money, power and partisanship are undermining the balance the US Constitution implies in making the constructive evolution of US society possible. If people come to believe that Congress doesn't work and/or it's a rigged game, the entire basis of the rule of law is undermined.
You couldn't get a better signal of a failing system than the selection of someone like Trump as a major party's nominee. Until this cycle, I had always thought the party and its members would prevent a person like this from assuming the mantle.
