An 'extinction level event' suggests something like

For you religious zealots, you might try calculating
the date of 'Noah's Flood' and then recalculate the
human growth rate from that.

But I see a flood as a more localized event. As in a
flood in Mesopotamia might kill a lot of Semites, but
it would have little effect on the fore-runners of the
Mayans in Central America.
