you are also right that there's surely a huge tussle behind the scenes for control of the republican party.

i think the foreign policy neocons and the domestic conservatives are two groups that can live alongside one another.

the evangelicals and the tea party seem to have emerged as two of the main parts of the trump mob. alongside the deplorables of many stripes.

it looks like neither the neocons nor the conservatives want to be led by trump's mob. they were happy to ride it. but they appear contemptuous of it.

the neocons are making their position explicit. the conservatives are staying quiet and possibly hoping to put their own policies inside trump's empty head; or that he fails. they have clearly redrawn his economic policy along conservative supply-side lines. they seem to have taken control of his teleprompter and are trying to shut his ad-libbing mouth. unfortunately for them, the better he does, the more his vanity convinces him to open it.

the old republican establishment - the gop left - is long gone. it's astonishing to realise that someone like reagan would offer many positions most modern republicans would consider leftish. even someone like jeb bush, who believes in many of the right wing ideas of the republican party, is more-or-less marginalised by the mob for having too much sympathy for immigrants.

hi tkc,

i see what you mean. but i think these folks are also probably sincere in thinking that trump is no commander-in-chief.

his inadequacy for the role is hard to miss. in your life, have you ever met someone you would less like to make a decision about launching a nuke? i haven't. okay, maybe some schizophrenic folks. but no sane person. not one.

so if i am gates or powell or anyone who was responsible for national security, it's an obvious call. an absolute no.
