Trump advisor on Hispanic issues quits after speech

Lindsay Ellis Updated 11:18 am, Thursday, September 1, 2016

A Houston immigration attorney who had advised Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he no longer supported the candidate after Trump's speech calling for the deportation of "anyone who has entered the United States illegally."

Jacob Monty, who had served on Trump's national Hispanic Advisory Council, called Trump a "populist, modern day Father Coughlin who demonized immigrants," referring to Charles Coughlin, an anti-Semitic 1930s radio host.

"He must want to lose," Monty wrote in a Facebook post, first reported by Politico. "He can do that without me."

Before Trump's speech, Monty expressed optimism for the candidate's developing immigration plan and for Trump's standing among Hispanics. He had previously written an editorial saying Trump "would be a lot more likely to steer a compromise reform through a Republican-controlled House of Representatives than a President Hillary Clinton."

Monty said in his resignation Thursday that he had urged Trump to adopt a plan that would give work authority to immigrants, improve border security and deport immigrants in the U.S. illegally who had committed crimes.

"He rejected that tonight," he wrote, "and so I must reject him."
